Description
The Humane Society of Utah Murray Clinic seeks a full-time veterinarian to support our surgery, shelter, and community medicine programs. This person will work alongside three other full-time staff veterinarians. Surgeries (estimated 50% of time) are primarily spay and neuter, though dental, soft tissue and orthopedic procedures are commonly performed on shelter pets. Shelter activities (25%) center around physical exams and developing treatment plans for shelter pets, along with participation in daily animal welfare discussions. Community medicine activities (25%) occur primarily through our onsite wellness clinic, and there is opportunity for involvement in larger community outreach programs if interested. We offer a four-day work week and eligibility for state and federal loan repayment programs.
Requirements: DVM (or equivalent degree) from an accredited veterinary school. Eligibility to obtain licensure in Utah. Eligibility to obtain DEA licensure and USDA accreditation if requested.
Preferred: 1 year of clinical practice in small animal, exotic, or shelter medicine.

Requirements
Responsibilities – Surgery (50%)
- Pre-surgical physical examinations
- HQHVSN on client-owned and shelter animals (cats, dogs, rabbits)
- Dentals on shelter animals
- Soft tissue and some orthopedic surgeries on shelter animals
- Diagnose and treat post-surgical medical complications
Responsibilities – Wellness (25%)
- Physical exams, with referral to full-service or emergency clinics where appropriate
- Collaborate with clients to develop diagnostic/treatment plans that align with goals & patient quality of life.
- Educate clients on nutrition, preventive health care, and general companion animal care.
- Maintain up-to-date medical records.
Responsibilities – Shelter (25%)
- Provide high-quality, compassionate, and cost-effective veterinary care, in accordance with shelter medicine principles, HSU protocols, and veterinary medicine best practices
- Maintain current medical records for all shelter pets receiving veterinary care
- Collaborate with shelter teams to provide high-quality care to animals on-site or in foster
- Participate in daily meetings regarding the care of shelter animals
- Ensure effective use of quarantine, isolation, and PPE to support herd health
- Guide appropriate and timely decisions about euthanasia
- Perform post-adoption veterinary exams on recently adopted animals
- Provide emergency care for shelter animals on-site or on-call
Responsibilities – Other
- Support the use of fear-free techniques across the building
- Perform humane euthanasia as needed, in accordance with HSU protocols
- Advocate for the humane treatment of animals
- Mentor veterinary students rotating through the Humane Society of Utah
- Other duties as assigned
Work Schedule
The Humane Society of Utah is open 7 days per week, 365 days per year. We can accommodate a four- or five-day work week for a full-time schedule. We are also happy to discuss part-time options for those interested in shelter-only, surgery-only, or wellness clinic-only positions.
Required Education
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent degree) from an accredited veterinary school
- Eligibility for licensure in Utah as a veterinarian; current licensure in Utah preferred.
- Eligibility to obtain DEA licensure if requested.
Qualifications
- English (required), Spanish (preferred)
- 1 year of clinical practice in small animal, exotic or shelter medicine preferred
- Fear-free certified within 60 days of hire.
- Ability to work calmly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with all levels of staff, volunteers, and the general public
- Ability to work standing for 8 or more hours
- Computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite, as well as experience with veterinary practice management systems (Cornerstone, Shepherd, ShelterLuv preferred)
- Willingness to support the mission, vision, and philosophy of the Humane Society of Utah
